In Memorium - Ann Longley (1946 - 2009)

The Executive, Directors and members of the Fire Service Association of Nova Scotia were shocked to learn of the sudden death of our first Executive Director, Ann Longley on Saturday, October 24. Ann was appointed Executive Director at the time of restructuring of the FSANS from the former Fire Officers Association of Nova Scotia and the retirement of long-time Secretary, Edna DeSanctis.

Ann was a tireless worker for the benefit of the Association and the members, frequently cajoling delinquent members to pay membership dues, and Directors to advise of their attendance at regular meetings of the Board. She had her hands full trying to keep past-President Bremner focused on the issues at hand, but somehow found the fortitude to ensure the steady progress of the association.

While Ann was dedicated to the FSANS and its Mission and Objectives, she was also a very conscientious forty-four year employee of the Municipality of the County of Kings, most recently as Municipal Clerk, and was active in the Association of Municipal Administrators of Nova Scotia. Her most compelling love however, was reserved for her family: husband Paul, son Scott, daughter Sherri and their families, especially her grandchildren. At breaks from FSANS business Ann would frequently relate the recent activities of her family, including her Alaska cruise with her elderly father a few years ago.

Ann leaves extremely large shoes to fill, but left the business of the Association in excellent condition. We will sorely miss her effectiveness and efficiency and will remember her fondly as we move forward.

A NOTE FROM HER FAMILY

We would like to take this opportunity to thank all of you for showing your support for our wife and mother. Your contribution and participation in the service meant a great deal to our entire family. We all took note of your uniforms and noted the various locations you all traveled to be with us. Saying thank you simply doesn't express our sincere appreciation for taking the time to remember our wife and mother.

She was a great woman who we know only worked with great people. So it is no surprise that she was dedicated to helping such an important and critical component of every community, the firefighter. Your dedication and passion for helping others was something she felt strongky about and was more than happy and privileged to assist you in any way she could.

We wish you all the best, but please, if our family can do anything to assist in your efforts, do not hesitate to ask. Our family would be honored to continue an affiliation with all of you.

Sincerely,

Paul, Scott and Sherri Longley
