In Memorium - Frederick (Fred) Fox (1953 - 2009)

The entire fire service of Nova Scotia was saddened to learn of the death of comrade Fred Fox after his protracted struggle with lung cancer. Fred was diagnosed approximately eighteen months ago and underwent aggressive surgery and treatments to improve his prognosis but learned a few months ago that his condition was non-curable and his future relatively short. Fortunately, while his health was still reasonably good, the Executive Committee visited with Fred and Prudy at their home in Windsor and presented him with the first Honourary Life Membership in the FSANS.


While many people disagreed with the position that Fred took on various issues, one could be certain that his position was well considered and thought through before he came to a conclusion. He could be likened to a one-man Senate – offering sober second thought to a discussion before allowing run-away zealousness to result in mistakes.


Fred was clearly dedicated to the fire service at all levels, serving the Town of Windsor, NS since the age of eighteen, and as volunteer then as the first paid Fire Chief of Windsor, for twenty years. He was instrumental in the merger of the Western Nova Scotia Fire Fighters Association with the FSANS, served for many years as the Nova Scotia Director to the Maritime Fire Chiefs Association and was an active
